Orissa is a holy place that serves as the residing place of Sun God and Lord Jagannath. It is a treasure store of intricately delicate monuments and temples for which Orissa is world famous. Konark is globally famed for the Sun Temple which is an extra ordinary work of art with intricate architectural brilliance. The temple alone attracts a myriad of tourist from all over the world to this place. The temple has been widely known as the black pagoda as it is made up of black granite and has been dedicated to the Sun God which can easily be analyzed by the name of the temple itself. This exclusive work of medieval architecture has been entitled under the world heritage site by UNESCO. Certain Myths and legends have always been an integral part of temples in India similarly Sun temple also encompasses various mythical legends behind, one of which explains that the temple is believed to be constructed by Lord Krishna's son - Samba who was cursed by his father and as a result afflicted from leprosy. Surya- the Sun God cured him after 12 yrs of penance and to dignify his deed and honor him Samba built this temple. Totally opposite to the legends history relates that it has been built by the Narasimha dev I in the mid-13th century during the reign of Ganga dynasty to commemorate his victory over the Mughals.
The temple was violated in the early 17th century by an envoy of the Mughal emperor Jahangir after which the temple fell into desuetude. The beauty of this temple cannot be described verbally; the edifice is delicately architected in the form of a chariot dragged by 7 horses embellished with stone carvings. The temple is visited by the tourists throughout the year but the number of pilgrims reaches to limits during October to March.
