Rajasthan the state of royalty is globally famed for sheltering the great Thar Desert and more over homing India's rich cultural heritage through its well developed cities. Jodhpur is one such equivalent city which is the second largest city in this desert state of Rajasthan. This Sun City was established in 1459 AD by the leader of Rathore clan - Rao Jodha and has been entitled after his name only. Jodhpur set at the brim of the Thar Desert and fringed by Jaisalmer on its west, Jalor and Pali on its south, Bikaner on its north and Nagaur on its eastern side. Once been the capital of the Marwar state Jodhpur echoes the royalty of Rajasthan through its serene desert.

jodhpur Most widely known as the 'gateway to Thar desert' this imperial city has been divided into two parts the old and the new. About a century after its establishment 10-km-long wall was built of stone which fringes the old city. Jodhpur comprises about 100 towers which are enclosed by defensive parapets. Jodhpur has outgrown itself into a major tourist spot and world widely known for its architectural wonders that can be seen through the fascinating forts and magnificent palaces. This fortress city was a dominant trade centre in the 16th century AD and is still one of the leading centers of wool, cattle, camels and Sal. Jodhpur is renowned for its vibrant bazaars and markets comprising world class antiques, tie and dye textiles, lacquer ware, embroidered leather shoes, puppets, carpets, Rajasthani textiles, miniature camels and elephants, clay figurines, marble inlay work and classic silver jewellery and fascinating handcrafts.

The Mehrangarh fort affirms to be a dominant attraction of Jodhpur. This massive fort was constructed in the 15th century AD on a rocky hill and glides up to 125mts above the plains. The impassable fortifications are six mtrs thick. This fascinatingly built fort recounts Jodhpur's past. Mehrangarh fort comprises a spell bounding landscape imperious with a rocky ridge including 8 magnificent gates leading out of the fortress. The fort comprises its wealth of historic attractions in the form of Moti Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Janaki Mahal, Chandan Mahal, Royal Durbar Takht, Rang Mahal, Pool Mahal and Zenana Deodi etc. the fort is also a home to a spectacular museum which is finely laid out. the museum houses a beautiful collection of ancient royal palanquins including domed gilt Mahadol palanquin of the governor of Gujarat and a huge collection of the heritage of Rathores having arms, costumes, paintings, decorated period rooms, etc. the museum endorses a grandeur of the royal families of the past era.

Umaid Bhawan Palace is yet another major place to witness the valor of the place. This palace was commissioned by Maharajah Umaid Singh as a famine relief scheme in 1929 and was constructed in 1944 AD. This pink sandstone and marble palace just like Mehrangarh fort houses a museum which another fascinating place to visit. Jaswant Thada is another jewel of Jodhpur is located to the north of the Mehrangarh Fort. The Rai ka Baag Palace, Balsammand Lake, Kaylana Lake, Sardar Samand Lake, Mandore Garden, Umed Garden and Nehru Park are some other major places who endorses the beauty of the destination attract a large number of people from all over the world.
