Sri Harmandir Sahib internationally famed as The Golden Triangle India serves as the chief tourist attraction as well as pilgrimage site in the whole of Punjab. Golden Temple is a large complex comprising different sections such as Darshani Deori, Amrit Sarovar, Harmandir Sahib, Akal Takht, and Central Sikh Museum etc. the central Sikh museum showcases the history and culture of the Sikh religion through a huge collection of paintings. The Golden Temple was founded by Guru Ram Das but the construction was done under the supervision of Guru Arjan Dev - the successor of Guru Ram Das.

Amritsar has been emerged as an important industrial centre with amplifying textile industries, sheltering the second largest milk processing plant of the country, thriving electric goods, auto parts and a carpet weaving industry. Even the rise in tourism and hospitality industries made it witness a rapid urban growth which ultimately led Amritsar being a centre for commercial activities and Medicare for North India.

Amritsar is widely recognized for its grim political history in the form of Jallianwala Bagh, a silent witness of the tragic massacre of 13 April 1919 by the British General Dyer when India was under the British rule, which is located near the Golden Temple and now has been transformed as a memorial serving as a tourist spot. It even witnessed the Operation Blue Star in the year 1984. The Wagha Border located at the Indo-Pakistan border is a place where people congregate to endure the change of guards' ceremony by the border security forces of Pakistan as well as India.

Some other prominent places which add on the charm to Amritsar are the Mata Temple and the Summer Palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Baba Bakala, Goindwal Sahib, Tarn Taran, Baba Sahi are some of the major Gurudwaras of Amritsar. Such historical and religious sites in Amritsar make it a dominant tourist destination of Punjab.
